ERIC2 Task Group 2008 Work Plan
Last update: 9/18/2008
Goal 1. Work on a solution to the duplicate record/holding issue.
Strategy a. Create virtual merge of bibliographic records. This strategy was investigated and discarded in 2005.
Strategy b. Have the SFX loader select a preferred record, from among multiple matches, on which to attach e-holdings.
| Objective | Responsibility | Timeline |
| Design matching algorithm | Bass, Phillips, Seguin, Vikor, Wallberg | Complete |
| Design matching program | | ITD will not pursue. |
Run matching program in report mode
Evaluate matching program
Goal 2. Determine the best means to obtain, load, and maintain bibliographic records for all resources represented in the SFX knowledge base, beginning with e-journals and e-books. This task includes exploring tools available from Ex Libris and other vendors for accomplishing this work.
Strategy a. Synchronize SFX and the Catalog.
| Objective | Responsibility | Timeline |
| Complete record creation/deletion specs for SFX loader | Ruth, Seguin, Vikor | End of Jan. 2008 |
| Vet SFX loader specification | CPC | Feb.-Mar. 2008 |
| Program SFX loader | ITD | ITD will not pursue. |
Test SFX loader | ERIC2, ITD
Put SFX loader into production | ITD
Strategy b. Make recommendation on MARC record sets
| Objective | Responsibility | Timeline |
| Obtain sample record sets from four vendors | Day, Wrubel | Feb. 2008 |
| Evaluate sample records | Ruth, Seguin, Kruse, CPC | Feb.-Mar. 2008 |
| Create grid of responses from record set vendors | Day | Mar. 2008 |
| Agree on recommendation | ERIC2 | Mar. 2008 |
| Written recommendation to CLD | | completed 8/25/08 |
Strategy c. Develop cross-task group process/communication model for e-books, taking into consideration other formats, such as streaming video and audiobooks
| Objective | Responsibility | Timeline |
| Evaluate issues | Gilbert, Herrick, Ruth with appropriate task groups | spring-summer 2008 |
| Propose process | Gilbert, Herrick, Ruth | summer-fall 2008 |
Goal 3. Evaluate the state of URLs in catalog for materials not represented in the SFX knowledge base, identify and evaluate the potential of outside sources against which to verify and update URLs and propose any remedies.
Strategy a. Define which URLs belong to materials not represented in the SFX KB.
| Objective | Responsibility | Timeline |
| Delete URLs from bib records that contain an SFX object ID number | ITD | After SFX loader implementation |
| Define reports for remaining URLs | | |
Status: The SFX loader was to have provided us a means of flagging records in the catalog as supported by SFX, but that loader effort has been eliminated. Given that we cannot readily identify in the catalog what is or isn’t in the SFX KB, the TG recommends simply continuing the consortium practice of manually fixing bad URLs as encountered and reported.
Goal 4. Address access for unaffiliated users
Status: Because the SFX loader is no longer viable, we cannot proceed on our plan to remove bib urls in preference to linking from the catalog through the SFX menu. Access for e-resources must continue to be split between the SFX menu and the URL in the bibliographic records. Therefore, we need not investigate alternate access for unaffiliated users.
Goal 5. Evaluate impact of TG work on users
| Objective | Responsibility | Timeline |
| Look at NetLibrary usage statistics before and after load into the catalog | Wrubel, Kruse, Vikor | by end of 2008 |
Goal 6. Recommend a new consortium task group for ongoing coordination of e-resource issues
